The Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science
The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship for Innovation in Science is an annual $10,000 scholarship for study at masters level in the sciences. The Scholarship is administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi.
The Foundation has been proud to support outstanding Māori science scholars since the inception of the Scholarship in 2012. Past scholarship recipients have won numerous academic awards, including several PhD scholarships.
The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship at the Auckland Museum
Sir Hugh Kawharu served as a member of the Auckland Museum Trust Board for 30 years, and was made a Fellow and Companion of the Museum in recognition of his service to the institution. The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship at the Auckland Museum comprises a grant of $10,000 for a student (undergraduate or graduate) enrolled at a New Zealand university in an area of relevance to the Museum's collections or departments and is provided by the Foundation and the Museum. The Museum administers the scholarship.
Sir Hugh Kawharu Annual Writing Prize
The Sir Hugh Kawharu Foundation alongside the Polynesian Society have established an annual writing prize of $1500 to commemorate Sir Hugh Kawharu’s significant contribution to Māori Studies, Anthropology and the Polynesian Society of which he was elected President in 1993.
The purpose of the award is to recognise the work of an author in producing an outstanding article published in Waka Kuaka: Journal of the Polynesian Society. The prize is administered by the editors of Waka Kuaka.

The prize will be awarded on the following criteria:
· Displays originality of thought
· Has an impact on Māori or Pacific communities
· Demonstrates research and writing excellence.

A full-length article (minimum of 5,000 words).

The Sir Hugh Kawharu Award at the Auckland Business School
The Foundation has established an award in association with the University of Auckland Business School for emerging, entrepreneurial and professional Māori who wish to undertake graduate studies in business. The award is administered through the Business School.
The Foundation has also supported study at the Business School through fellowships.
Te Rau Maunga | Sir Hugh Kawharu Foundation Matariki Scholarship
The scholarship is targeted to Māori tertiary students studying in the area of primary sector resource management. The scholarship is open to students studying commerce, science, the environment or engineering, with a demonstrable interest in a career associated with the primary industries.
The scholarship comes with an annual monetary award of up to $3,900. Applications should be made using the form available via email.
Leadership programmes
The Foundation sponsors participation in leadership programmes on an ad hoc basis. This support is dependent on co-sponsorship by hapū, iwi or partner organisation.
